Merriewold Castle is just one case out of nearly 400 years of history. Barbara Farmer is not the only life that was claimed by No Man's Land. But when interviewed, even the family and current employees claim to have experienced strange things and will almost never stay there late at night. The Castle was bought by the Kaplan family, who have now turned it into a real estate office. He was then hauled away to the Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital. Charles was tried but found to be "temporarily insane" in a legal precedent setting case. The attorney called the cops but it was too late for Barbara. He killed her with a single shot and then unsuccessfully tried to kill himself. She began to collect her belongings when out of one of the many secret passage ways in the house, Charles emerged. When she got there Charles was nowhere to be found. In August, Barbara, who was then staying with her family, prearranged a visit with her attorney to the castle to collect her belongings. Broken fingers/hands is something that ties a lot of these cases together.Įventually, in the summer of 1963, the divorce was finalized. In addition to the drastic personality change, and important part of Farmer's walk in No Man's Land to note is that when he returned, he had a broken finger. It was around this time he also accused his wife and her lover of doing black magic in a colony they built with his money. She would catch him staring at her and the kids with a demonic look in his eyes. He began to act strangely around his family and the nanny. ![]() It wasn't until that night that Charles came back. He was gone for hours and his family was beginning to get worried. This put a strain on their relationship for sure, but everything changed that fateful evening when Charles went on a walk in No Man's Land. His wife, Barbara, was having an affair with artist, Wayland Gregory. As with a lot of marriages, however, he was having difficulties. Throughout our investigation, people close to the Farmer family describes Charles as an affluent family man who loved his kids and enjoyed his life. It eventually ended up with Charles Farmer, a Hungarian immigrant. His wife, Ruth Dill, divorced Johnson in 1937 and sold the castle. It all started in 1924 when Seward Johnson, heir to the Johnson & Johnson throne had the castle built for his wife as a wedding present. John introduced us to Merriewold Castle and its sinister history. That is until Will and I stated working on the No Man's Land project with local filmmaker and writer, John Hulme. The Castle is something I'd pass by all the time when driving on River Road but I never knew what it was. I first became acquainted with No Man's Land when I heard about the Castle. ![]()
